Library Journal Review
Starred Review. Racism has played a major role in American society since the nation's founding and continues to shape our institutions and daily lives. This outstanding work provides detailed information on the topic in a balanced, comprehensive, and insightful manner. A thought-provoking introduction and a brief chronology open the four-volume set and are followed by more than 700 well-written and intelligently researched articles. Entries run from a page to several pages in length and include cross-references and recommendations for further reading and research. In addition to the articles, each volume contains alphabetical and topical lists of entries in the set. Pictures, illustrations, and sidebars enhance the presentation. The encyclopedia concludes with almost 300 pages of primary-source documents and an exhaustive 100-page person and subject index. Contributors are scholars who write articulately and astutely on historical and contemporary forms of racism experienced by African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, ethnic white immigrant groups, and many others. The authors cover every facet of race from people and institutions to socioeconomic and political systems. Their styles vary but are extremely effective in conveying the consequences and effects of racism in our culture. In short, the editors and contributors resoundingly achieve their stated purpose of producing a work that contributes to the understanding of racism in the United States while creating a valuable resource for general readers, students, and teachers on race relations and racial inequality. VERDICT A use-first reference for any student or researcher of race-related and minority issues in the United States.-Rob Tench, Old Dominion Univ. Lib., Norfolk, VA (c) Copyright 2014.
